About

Software engineering is changing. Not the fundamentals — those have not moved. But the tools, the workflows, the expectations: all of it is shifting under the pressure of AI systems that can generate code faster than any engineer can review it.

The industry’s response has largely been to celebrate the speed. Ours is to ask what we are trading away.

Engineered Not Generated is an independent publication for software engineers who want to think clearly about what AI changes — and what it does not. We believe the value of a software engineer was never in the typing. It was always in the judgment. The AI moment does not invalidate that. It raises the stakes for it.

We cover the tools that matter, the ideas that hold up, and the practices that separate software that works from software that lasts. Our contributors are working engineers: people who have shipped systems under pressure, led teams through hard decisions, and now find themselves navigating the same questions as everyone else — with more experience and less patience for hype.

We do not claim to have final answers. We commit to rigorous thinking, honest assessment, and treating our readers as the professionals they are.

If that sounds like your kind of publication, you are in the right place.
